I’m helping someone purchase his second Avid. He has one of the original SD Adrenaline. The dealer is trying to sell him the software only version & mojo for 15k less than the DNxcel version. He needs component in/out. He works in 2:1. Will he loose any performance with this system or will it be comparable to his older system? The new system is spec’d with the wx8400, two 3.0 dual cores, 4Gb ram. The dealer is telling him that this software only version will perform exactly the same as the DNxcel version, he’ll just loose the ability to upgrade to HD.
    True?

He should be fine. What the HD card provides is the ability to capture HD material over an SDI connection using the DNxHD resolutions. These CODECS allow you to edit with HD material with minimal quality loss but using barely more storage space than SD footage. With the set-up suggested by the reseller he can still edit HD if he wants. He’ll have to capture the HD over firewire and not be able to take advantage of the DNxHD CODEC space saving. DVCProHD and HDV are both native capture resolutions available over firewire.

As for wanting to capture SD material over component signal he can do that with the Mojo and the Avid component cable. Make sure the resller provides an audio bump box to handle the whole issue of the audio connectors on the Mojo and the XLR connectors on the Beta or other high end deck.

Exactly. The Adrenaline Box with DNxHD card will transcode HD footage via SDI on the fly. On a software only system you can bring in your HD footage via firewire and then transcode it to DNxHD for faster editing using less storage space. You just lose time waiting for it to transcode.

Contrary to popular belief, the Adrenaline box/Mojo/Mojo SDI provide absolutely no hardware acceleration regarding realtime streams of video playback or effects handling. They’re breakout boxes that do some convesions on input/output, depending on what you buy. Otherwise, your software only version will be identical to a fully spec’d MC Adrenaline.

    Michael.

    That answers it.
    Thanks!

    bringing us to the question…
    does he really “an Avid”?
I see much more bang for the buck elsewhere. From stability to options, a FCP would save him thousands, offer better quality and give him more capabilities.
