Yeah, the bazillion settings in Adobe Media Encoder can be really frustrating as there’s no quick and easy guide to tell us which settings work well together. There’s a whole lot of trial and error involved…
Try using the preset for H.264 mpeg4 1980x1080px square pixels with a bit rate of 10-12mb, or 1280×720 square pixels with a bit rate of 7-9mb. Make sure you specify square pixels as HDV footage uses rectangular pixels (hence the 1440 instead of 1980). You can check your output on the left side of the Media Encoder window under the output tab.
If you have Quicktime loaded on your computer, you can also export as a Quicktime file using the same H.264 specs. If you’re on a Win7 PC and you’re using Quicktime, make sure you save the exported file to your desktop instead of to a folder on one of your hard drives. That’s a funky quirk to the current version of Quicktime and Win7.
