adobe premiere pro 2 importing video files
so i just got premiere pro 2 and am trying to import one of the star wars movies. the file is an avi and when i try to import it into premiere it just gives me the audio, not the video. is there any special settings i need to have for importing movies into the project. if anyone knows answers please let me know. thanks.

what is your video codec? You should only be working with braodcast based editing codecs in Premiere like DV. If you are trying to use a DivX or XviD your only going to run into problems. It’s an output codec not an ingest/edit codec.

Premiere Elements 4 is designed to edit many of these redux codecs.

i think the codecs are xvid but i don’t know how to check. is there any way i can convert them into dv before importing them?

Yes, Pro wont handle Xvid, Elements will. There are hundreds of apps for converting one file to another type. VirtualDub is free and very powerful, but not easy to use. Converting already compressed video to another type for editing and then again for export will reduce the quality noticeably.

with elements i still only get the audio from the movie file. the movie file says .avi but i don’t konw what type of codec it has. it plays right now with vlc player but will also play with media player. if someone could get back to me about how to get either pro or elements to import the file and show the video part that would be great. im kind of new at this sort of thing but i got it to work once in the past using pro but accidentally deleted the project. thanks

One of my computers I use for testing all sorts of crap. When it gets too wobbly I kick it in the head and reinstall Windows. Premiere Elements 4 will edit Xvid, but I have an app called K-Lite Codec Pack installed and one of its components (ffdshow) launches when Elements plays an Xvid clip.
Working with video that was not captured via firewire into Premiere is a crap shoot.
