Adobe Premiere CS3 Making Movie cuts HELP!!!
Posted by Justin Dean on January 6, 2009 at 10:41 pmThe cuts between shots looks terrible. It looks nothing like an actual movie cut and all the transitions look like something out of a wedding slide show. Anyone else know what I can do to make the cuts between shots look smoother like a FILM. Lemme know, thanks!

January 9, 2009 at 2:01 pmIm talking straight cuts. I shot a few shorts and when I edited them, the cuts don’t look like what you would see in a movie. i didn’t know if there was a transition or something people use to make the cuts look MOVIE LIKE? Thanks.

January 11, 2009 at 11:17 pmim not sure what you mean by movie-like without seeing an example
the principal of straight cuts is the same, the only thing that changes is the frame rate, film being film and digital video .. well you get the idea

January 11, 2009 at 11:28 pmI shot a short and when I do a straight cut from shot to shot, it looks rough. It doesn’t look smooth. It doesn’t look like a movie that you would watch. It screams low budget. Do you know what the standard frame rate is?
I can e-mail you the short so you can see what I’m talking about so you can see how the cuts work.

January 12, 2009 at 5:09 amOK, a really basic question first. Are you cutting on action? And if so, is the action matching? And is the color and exposure balance matching?
Also, many movies (features) tend toward “soft cuts”, which are very short (3-4 frame) dissolves, rather than literal cuts. It’s been that way for a long time.

January 13, 2009 at 10:45 pmMight seem weird, I’m cutting on pretty basic things. Like when an actor has something in his hand, I’m cutting to a close up of the object. I have no idea if the color and balance are matching…just being honest.
I think soft cuts is probably what I’m looking for, any idea on how to adjust/make that in this program?>

January 13, 2009 at 11:18 pmuse a cross dissolve and bring the duration to 3 or 4 frames, should do it nicely

January 14, 2009 at 1:51 amThe 3-4 frame dissolves are standard “soft cuts”, as Peter notes.
And do be careful about matching action, not “crossing the line”, and maintaining color and exposure balance. It’s very often the little things that add up to good visuals.
