Posted by Alan Condra on August 10, 2005 at 4:09 amI continually get a “failed to return frame” error message when using Adobe Media Encoder to output mpeg 1 files from PP1.0. Suggestions?

August 10, 2005 at 11:47 amThis was a known issue…there might be fix at Adobe, but think that renaming Pro’s executable (to anything else) will solve the problem. Windows is stopping things.

August 10, 2005 at 12:50 pmIs naming ‘Pro’s executable’ something that I can do? Has this bug been fixed in PP 1.5?

If you are using Win XP with SP2 on a HyperThreading machine the problem is “well known” and one simple solution is the following.
Just before you start exporting (i.e. hit the save button), open the “task manager” (CTRL+ALT+DEL), choose “processes” and rightclick on “Adobe Premiere Pro.exe” in the list. Choose “Set Affinity” and uncheck the “CPU1” checkbox. Close the “task manager” and start exporting. If it is the well known problem it should work fine now. The next time you start up Premiere Pro it will use the “second” cpu again (i.e. the CPU1 checkbox will be checked again automatically).Hope this helps

August 11, 2005 at 2:15 amThat seems to do the trick. Thanks. How did you come by such a workaround?? Has this issue been fixed in PP 1.5?

August 11, 2005 at 6:40 amHi!
No credit to me for this!
I was very frustrated when I encountered this problem and did extensive searches on the net. There were some other suggestions but they were rather complicated so I was happy when I found this.
And no, the problem is not “fixed” in PPro 1.5 since its not really PPro that is the problem. I was using 1.5 when I encountered the problem. The problem is with Microsofts Service Pack 2 for WinXP. If you do not install SP2 the media encoder will work as it should and since SP2 was released after PPro 1.5, you cannot blame Adobe for not “forseeing” Microsofts upcoming changes in the operating system.Hopefully the “integration” with SP2 is “better” in the next version of PPro.
