Adobe has created quite a nightmare
Posted by Mdatre on January 17, 2006 at 1:14 pmWhile I’m excited over the new release, I’m finding wading through the hype a real nightmare. All I want is an upgrade to my Video Collection package, I already own Flash 8 and Acrobat 7, and I can’t seem to get the correct upgrades for my needs. And where the heck are they hiding Encore DVD?! It’s not in the production bundle?
According to Adobe’s store, I’m going to be shelling out over $1,200 just to get the 3 upgrades I actually need. I love the Cow’s reviews on all the new bells and whistles, but I think I’m going to have to pass. And shame on Adobe for not letting anyone know about the packaging of Flash 8. I could have saved on that purchase 3 months ago.

January 17, 2006 at 3:04 pmI hate that even though I own a few different apps, I don’t get credit for that when upgrading to one of the packages. I agree that Adobe needs a completely new Marketing department. The one they have has no grasp on reality.

Agreed.
I just called Adobe to complain, “I have several of the pieces of Studio, and feel as if I’ll be paying twice if I upgrade to Studio. Are there any further discounts if you own several of the eligible software packages?”
The answer was “No. Not now. Maybe later. You’re the second person who’s asked that so far today.”
If others make this request, maybe they’ll listen? Probably not.

January 17, 2006 at 4:48 pmNo kidding. I looked at the upgrade page and it’s totally confusing. I also have most (Premiere Pro, Encore and Audition 1.5)also(AE 6.5 Professional and Photoshop 7), but not all the “Collection” it looks like I’d have to pony up the full $1,249 for an upgrade! (Purchasing the individual pieces eliminates the ability to get/use the “bridge”!)
Not sure it’s worth that from what I’m reading.
It might be a good time to use part of this $$ to get the Sony Vegas/DVD Architect and see what that does. After all Premiere Pro 1.5 is currentlyu dong the job for me. I expected the upgrade to be about half the announced price and thought it would be worthwhile moving to the next release for a reasonable price. However nearly $1,300 seems a little steep for what “enhancements” it appears to include.
AE looks very good, Premiere Pro — so, so, Encore — not sure yet what’s been added that’s of interest, Audition — don’t really use it, Photoshop/Illustrator — ? what I have seems to do the job for me.
Just upgrading AE by itself is a lot cheaper and perhaps the way to go.
For now, I’ll sit and see what the “real” reviews have to say after the upgrades are out and in use. -

January 18, 2006 at 3:22 amI agree that the bundling of these upgrades is rather eccentric and very overpriced.
$800-$1,200 is too much for what they’re offering. Why didn’t they just make an upgrade of the standard video collection components for about $400 -$500? The original video collection was the price of these upgrades
It looks like the loyal Adobe customers are getting stuck paying for the acquisition of Macromedia.
Rather than spend this much on an upgrade, I’d consider swithcing to Vegas or maybe even Final Cut Pro.
I’m very disappointed. We can always vote with our wallets,by keeping them closed.

January 18, 2006 at 6:12 pmI couldn’t agree more.
There must be many like me who have been using Photoshop/InDesign and Illustrator for many years and who bought the Video Collection for the video apps that were required. Now There is no upgrade option that suits what I need. I either pay again for apps I already have and don’t get all the upgrades I need, buy a Video Production bundle and get apps I don’t need or buy seperates.
This time unless Adobe get there marketing act together I’ll stick with what I’ve got. They really don’t understand the market they’re operating in.

January 18, 2006 at 10:38 pmWhile Adobe’s daily changing bundles are confusing, some people may benefit from them. I found this page buried on their site. They should really link to it from the home page. The Standard Video Collection (now Production Studio Standard) is $499. While the Professional version is $300 more. If you don’t own Illustrator, that $300 buys it as well as the extra features of After Effects Pro. That’s arguably a good deal. Keep browsing that page and plugging in other combinations and you might notice some pricing weirdness. But I hope this helps to clarify how to get from point A to B through upgrades.

January 19, 2006 at 4:02 amKinda funny, I’m getting this error when viewing that page:
“The page you were trying to view is no longer available. To continue shopping for Adobe products, please visit the Adobe Store main page.”
