  • Adobe Ease In/Ease Out vs. Vegas Keyframe Smoothness

Probably the most vexing thing for me has been the way Vegas seemed limited regarding motion graphics. Trying to create smooth exits and entrances of titles and lower thirds never seem as good as what Premiere or AE could do with it’s Ease In and Ease Out settings. And then last week I stumbled upon the Pan/Crop Smoothness setting. By turning it up to %100 I seem to get the very “elasticity” the Adobe gives users by default.

For my own edification I did some experimenting with the Smoothness setting and the various keyframe options (Linear, Fast, Slow, Smooth, Sharp, and Hold) and came up with this video as the result.

I’m curious to know how other editors may be using the Smoothness setting. Thanks.

I have used the smoothness (keyframe interpolation slider) in the past — but not lately — frankly I forgot it was there. Thanks for reminding me. No doubt it will help “smooth” things out.

No wonder I spend time here. Always picking things up. Thanks.

    Nice comparison, thanks Rob!

It shows, how different kinds of movement is possible to do in Vegas.
However these movements are smooth (if needed), but only along a straight line…
But what if you want a smooth, kind of “natural” motion along a curve?
    That’s a weakness of Vegas, no doubt, it’s almost impossible. (But there’s a workaround…)
How would that (or similar) go with Premiere?

In Vegas I need Vegasaurs tweener tool for that.
Now I move a “mouse” cursor over a PAL test pattern.

    Design the motion very roughly

    The result:

    Then apply tweener:

And the kind of smooth motion:

All that in 5 minutes. Would something like that work in Premiere?

    Best regards

When I do animations like this in Vegas Pro it helps me reminding “smoothness” is for spatial interpolation (curves around corners) while the keyframe types are for temporal interpolation (speed). It won’t be clear when using a straight line animation.
