  • Adobe CS3 Licensing Question

Does Adobe any longer allow a user to keep one version of software on their workstation and another on a laptop? Currently we have 6 versions of CS3 on different workstations, but if one of our artists is going down to a shoot with a laptop or if someone needs to work remotely, do we need to purchase additional licenses for all of our laptops? Back in the AE 6.5 days I was able to have one version per workstation and could also install onto our laptops. Are those days over with this new system of machine licensing?? Just curious.

    Thanks,
    Mike

To my knowledge, yes, you are able to put CS3 on a desktop and a laptop. I am currently using that exact scenario.

    ditto

generally, and I Do mean generally, as in READ YOUR EULA a distributer will allow around 2-4 machines as long as you are not using them at the same time. The idea is to not be getting MORE from your software than you should be. ie, fcp will quit on you if you have the same licneced version on 2 computers on the same network.

Of course. However, when Adobe started locking their serial numbers to a specific machine, I wasn’t sure if you could register more than machine with them per serial number. Final Cut works differently where you can install the same serial number on different machiens, but you just can’t have 2 machines running the same serial number at the same time. Has Adobe changed their install process with CS3 to make this process more like Apple’s?? From what Tim said, it sounds like they have. Is there anything I need to be aware of when registering our laptop versions with them?

I’m pretty sure it will only let you activate 2 copies of the software on different computers using the same serial number. You should be able to run both installations on networked computers simultaneously, but I don’t think it’s allowed in the strict interpretation of the user agreement. All of this only applies to Retail licenses, the terms of use may be different for Corporate licensing. You’d have to check with Adobe.
