There was a thread yesterday about a post with a blocked URL. The URL wasn’t actually blocked, except by punctuation: our HTML mechanism saw brackets, and didn’t recognize the URL as valid.

As a reminder, NO external links are blocked, although the “obvious suspects” are filtered for hand review: porn, warez, phony watches, etc. TinyURLs are typically filtered because we’ve seen a number of these attempt to mask the kinds of sites I just mentioned, and there’s no way we could verify them all individually.

Any other external links are just fine…although, as always, we expect those links to be “on topic” so to speak. The one discussed certainly was.

So with the original poster’s permission, I’ve removed that thread.

To avoid any future misunderstandings, we’ve added a short message under the word “Message” and above the white text entry box on all post pages, pointing out the handful of characters that will cause parts of posts to disappear.

To keep things on the topic of FCP itself, I’ve closed this thread too. If you have any questions about my administrative actions here, other questions, comments, etc. about The COW, its policies, or anything else for that matter, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Doesn’t even have to be anything related to the COW. Give a shout any time.

My thanks to everyone for a speedy and professional resolution. We now return you to your regularly scheduled high-signal low-noise community experience.

    Best,
    Tim
