I am running a COS-11x omni-directional miniature pre-polarized lavalier mic directly into Channel 1 on the HVX.

    I went through these steps:
    – I connect the XLR to Input 1
    – I switch the Input 1 option to “on”
    – I switch the toggle next to Input 1 to “Mic” because I have an
    external mic connected.
    – I switch CH 1 SELECT to Input 1 and leave CH2 SELECT set it INT
    (R)

    (1) Was this the correct set of steps for connecting the lav and configuring the HVX? It sounds a bit tinny.

I now want to adjust the levels for CH1 on the LCD display.

    I went through these steps:
    – I attach the lav to my shirt in the same way it will be worn during the shoot
    – I adjusted the dial on the back for CH 1 until the average hits the second mark, the -12db mark

    (2) Was this the correct way to adjust the audio levels? Does anyone have any other advice?

    Thanks!!!

Change from MIC to LINE on the front switch for the lav. Lavs are considered LINE inputs. If you had a boom mic you’d go for MIC.

It sounds like you’ve turned the Mic Power on (” – I switch the Input 1 option to “on””), which you shouldn’t have to do for that lav. It’s only for mics that require phantom power. If so, turn it off.

Your last step, on setting the levels, is correct, though also listen to what you’re hearing from talent. The level needles can’t replace the quality of your ears. Don’t forget that you can use the monitor volume to on the top of the camera to adjust your headphone level so it’s comfortable.

I did have the mic power on so I turned it off.

    1. Can this damage the mic since it is already powered?

    2. When I switched from MIC to LINE on the front, it no longer recorded audio. I switched it back to MIC and it recorded again. Why did it not work the way you suggested?

    Thanks.

    Hi Stan

You had everything right the first time; As a production sound mixer, I’ve never heard of a lav mic running at line level (but maybe I’m missing something). And the Sanken will run on 48V power which the HVX as well as all other pro cameras supply.

As far as it sounding tinny, I would have to hear what you’re talking about. I use Sankens (COS11X) (w/wireless beltbacks) and they sound great. Have you used it with other cameras? How did it sound then? What are you listening to it with?

[David Jones] “As a production sound mixer, I’ve never heard of a lav mic running at line level (but maybe I’m missing something)”

Then you just learned something new. 😉 My Sennheiser lavs (ew 100 G2 UHF Wireless) both run at LINE. If I’m using MIC, you can hardly hear them with the dials turned up full, and it’s a tinny sound. Since he was getting a tinny sound, I made the (apparently false) assumption he should change the setting. I’m not familiar with his lav. Also didn’t know it needs the phantom power.

Ahhh…I was wondering about that; yeah, he’s (I assume) just running a lav mic directly into the camera (no wireless).

That’s funny about those ew100’s: I just got done with a shoot with those (the camera guy brought them) and I wish I had had more time to experiment with them because there was something weird about them, like the line and mic “thing” was backwards! Anyway, I never had time to see if the camera or the wireless was set up wrong or what the deal was…lol.
