  • adjusting white without washout…

    Hi guys.

I’m new to the fourm, sorry if this has already been asked but I had a search and couldn’t find an exact match for my issue.

I am cutting a scene with a person talking to camera against a white background. I am trying to reduce the shadow that has been cast behind the speaker onto the white sheet by using the colour corrector 3 way but I can’t seem to fully shed it without also washing out her face.

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks

    Dave

I would suggest making two identical video tracks, stacked one above the other, in synch. The top one you will mask, the lower one, you will use the 3-way color corrector on. Select the top layer, your actor. Using the multipoint mask tool in final cut, setting the edges of it relatively soft, you cut the actor out of the foreground, then you can adjust the two parts separately. I suggest you play with the blend modes and opacity as part of this.

I recently got footage of a golfer being interviewed on the course at high noon. Her hat brim threw a really hard shadow over her face, and the camera crew didn’t use any fill reflector or lighting. I used the 8-point masking tool and feathered the edges and was able to brighten up the upper face under the hat brim without it looking “shopped”.

Luma key and replace with white.

A picture would help to see what you’re really dealing with.

Try to use the Limiter in the 3W-CC. The changes will affect only the selected area.

Thanks so much for all the replies.

I am trying the various methods suggested but so far the multipoint mask option seems to be working well. 🙂

    Thanks again,

    Dave
