  • Adjusting gain before encoding to AC-3 and using WavRMS

A video I have has several sections where the volume level is really loud. I’ve been using WavRMS to find the dialnorm parameter of the entire file. This works, but there is still a huge dynamic range difference.

Instead of adjusting Gain lower on these loud sections, is there any other way to level them out? I could turn on Dynamic Range Compression profiles in AC-3, but this usually causes “pumping” of the audio. I want to avoid that.

Is there a way to encode each section seperately and use different Dialnorm parameter for each? And then stitch these sections together again into one AC-3 file?

Are the sections louder because they’re supposed to be louder or because they weren’t mixed properly?
If it’s the latter, go back to Vegas, correct any audio issues and send a proper audio file to your DVD authoring software.

The sections are actually different recordings. ie. music recital, Christmas recital, and a birthday party. All recorded at different times, but on same tape. I captured the whole tape into one DV file.

So should I just adjust the gain lower on the louder parts, then output WAV file and use WavRMS tool to find approximate Dialnorm. Then encode ac-3? Won’t adjusting gain lower, reduce dynamic range?

It’s all a matter of personal preference.
When watching anything on TV, I prefer to have quiet things be quiet and loud things be loud (just like real life!!) but my wife grabs the remote and turns it up or down so that the level stays the same 🙁
Personally (as I said earlier), I’d adjust the levels to my satisfaction in Vegas and not worry about it any more.
