  • Adjusting Exposure Levels in Timelapse Sequence

Posted by Steve Price on October 9, 2008 at 5:29 pm

    Hello,

A DOP has come to me with a graded telecine transfer of some 16mm time-lapse rushes he shot of the sun setting over Big Ben. All looks very nice. Problem is, he kept manually adjusting the iris during filming so the exposure suddenly pops up by a stop or two every few seconds.

My task is to correct the difference in exposure each time this happens, so the time-lapse runs seamlessly from start to finish, as the sun sets over the Houses of Parliament until it’s dark, showing the building floodlit at night in all it’s glory.

So, what’s the best way to match exposure between frames?

I know, he should have sorted this when he had the chance in the Spirit TK, but he didn’t, so I’ve been landed with the job of erasing his mistakes!

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Steve.

Add a cut at each exposure change and adjust the level with a color correction filter.

Thanks – I thought that might be the solution – it’s a right nightmare trying to match the frames manually like that, I wondered if there was any sort of frame matching analysis facility that can automate that process?

Export the footage as an image sequence of a billion jpegs. Open in Photoshop, apply any of several scripts/actions that will create matched exposure values. Hire a Photoshop geek.

the huge issue with timelapse is that the exposure cannot be consistent. At some point, the director or editor has to decide ti’s time for the sky to go dark.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
