hey, ive been editing music videos to mash them up in vegas 10 pro. how ever ive just relised that i need a bit of footage right at the start and dont want to have to go through the whole editing thing by moving ever little bit.

is there a way to shift what ive done so i can add the bit to the start?

Here’s 2 ways to do it.
#1. Place your cursor at the very beginning, go “Insert – Time”, insert the desired length and drop the new event in place.
#2. Enable “Auto Ripple” (it’s a toolbar icon), click on the very first clip and slide things to the right, drop the new clip in place, slide things back and disable “Auto Ripple”.
Make sure when you enable it that the “All Tracks, Markers and Regions” option is selected in the dropdown menu next to the icon.

[Mike Kujbida] “#1. Place your cursor at the very beginning, go “Insert – Time”, insert the desired length and drop the new event in place.”

Make sure that you press Ctrl+A to select everything in the entire project before you use Insert Time because it only affects tracks with selected events. (This has bitten me before)

hi ok, did that. what do you need to do if theres some space thats needs to be taken away from the start? as cut or delete does nothing

Don’t worry about space at the beginning of the timeline. You can avoid rendering this as part of your video by setting the loop region.

Double-click on the empty space on the timeline to set the time selection to cover everything, then drag the left edge of the selection to the start of your first event so that the selected time span covers the part you want to render (typically from the start of the earliest event until the end of the last), then click “Render As…” (File menu) and make sure the “Render loop region only” option at the bottom of the dialog is checked. That will give you a video that only includes the timespan you selected.

The alternative is to use the power of ripple editing (as per Mike’s post above) to move everything on your timeline back so that the first event starts at 00:00:00. Just drag the first event back to the start.

If you want to have a second of two of black at the start of your video, leave a blank gap before the first event (or make your loop region start ahead of the first event). You can extend the loop region beyond the last event to make a black “tail” at the end of your video.

Turn on Ripple Edit, double-click the empty space to create a timeline selection, then press the delete key. The space will be deleted and all other events will follow the ripple edit mode that you selected (e.g., all events, markers, etc.)

Don’t forget to turn off ripple edit when you’re done.
