adjusting 5.1 surround volume
Posted by Bob Zelin on March 13, 2010 at 4:08 pmHi –
probably wrong forum, but Kona users are the hi end today.
In an edit suite (not sound mix room), when you want to adjust your overall volume, how are you controlling the volume of your 5.1 monitoring system for audio ? Is there an equivelent to the Mackie Big Knob for 5.1 ?Bob Zelin

March 14, 2010 at 4:14 pmThanks Warren, but it’s discontinued. I was shocked to see the hi prices of many of these products, but I found the SPL unit for under $1000 –
The Grace Audio 5.1 volume knob is over $5000 !

March 16, 2010 at 3:40 amIf.. you are using a receiver with 6 to 8 direct audio inputs,
I have used my M-Audio ProFire 610 ($360-$400). Use a combo cable with 8 TS to RCA.Now that I have a new receiver that omits those, I use HDMI
from my MXO2 mini to the receiver, also 8 channels.
With the latest 1.9 software the MXO2 audio also shows up
as an audio selection in the general sound prefs in OS X.
Select the output channels/layout in the Audio Midi Setup app. -

March 29, 2010 at 8:33 pmGrace is expensive. Dangerous Music also mades a 5.1 system. I was looking at Coleman Audio SR5.1 mkII. (Didn’t end up getting it). If you don’t need suming it looks like it could do the trick for around 1,000.
Some monitoring systems have this built in. The Digital JBL’s maybe with the remote (they mute/control volume from software, remote and speaker face). I think Blue Sky as well.
On the low end (I have done this to test output on consumer QC setups) you can take 50 ohm BNC AES outputs and go directly into Discreet Digital RCA ins of consumer amplifiers.
You could also program digital mixers (like the Yamaha 01v96 with additional routing outputs) to control it. Gets pricy.
