Adjecting Templates

Hello Everyone:

First, let me say that I am not a neophyite when it comes to computers. However, I have not used this particular program (After Effects) before. So please excuse the “stupid” questions from me.

I plan to download (purchase) a template to be used in a video I will be editing. My question is what are the procedures of adjusting the “length” of the template in After Effects. The template I like is 11 seconds long. I need it to be 9 seconds long.

Any suggestions.

If I am in the wrong section of the forum, please let me know.

There are a multitude of ways to decrease the length of the project. I too am relatively new to AE, so i am sure someone will give you a better process than the two options I am about to give, but suffice it to say that you should be able to find a way that will work for this project file.

Time Remap – quick and dirty
If you are not too concerned with the quality you can always insert the composition into another composition, right click, select time, then enable time remap. Slide the end remap-keyframe to nine seconds and the entire video will play more quickly and finish at 9 seconds. Make sure frame blending is on.

Distribute keyframes accordingly –
open up the project template and start sliding the keyframes earlier in the timeline so that timing suits your needs. Be careful though because once one layer is moved, everything following will be affected, especially the camera. It will take a little more time, but have much more rewarding results.

Hi there,

Both these suggestions are correct for retiming footage and keyframes in the Timeline but if you want to increase the duration of the actual Composition you need to go to Composition > Composition Settings, and change the Duration in here. Then you can use the techniques mentioned earlier to adjust the timing of layers and keyframes.

Also, a tip for retiming keyframed animation. Select all layers, hit the U key to open up all keyframes. Select all keyframes by dragging a marquee around them. Then hold down the Alt key while dragging the first or last kayeyframe. This will stretch the animation, keeping the relative timing intact.

Alternatively, you can do the same in the Graph editor using Free Transform.
