  • Additive Dissolve…..what’s the secret?

Posted by Dennis Leppell on November 8, 2010 at 8:15 pm

So one thing I’ve never been able to get the handle on is what it takes to make a good quality Additive dissolve..a la CSI Miami. Every time I try, I get just a plain looking brightening during the dissolve….no blooming on the highlights whatsoever; and TMTS Flashframe is either too much, or not enough….seems like I can’t ever get it -just right-.

Who can point me in the right direction for the right formula?

(At the risk of helping someone mimic CSI Miami…YUCK!…)

What have you tried so far?

As mentioned, I’ve used the default. Too Much Too Soon’s Flashframe+changing the blur and luminence. Various dissolves to white. Keyframing the Bloom filter.

I know, CSI Miami is cheesy (I love how it always seems to be 10 am sunlight coming through the windows). It’s just a good example of the that nice blossomy additive dissolve I’m looking for

Have you tried using the bloom filter on both clips and keyframing the amount/brightness/threshold to simulate a transition? Then you can throw a 4 frame cross dissolve between them.
