  • Adding Z-Depth To Your Logo – query

Hi. This is my first ever post to the forum, so before I go on, I must say thanks to all the great tips and expertise that this place provides.

My query is about Roland Kahlenberg’s article, ‘Adding Z-Depth To Your Logo’ which demonstrates a great technique of using the shatter effect to extrude some text. Unfortunately, I am trying to add z-depth to a pre-composed graphic that is animating and changing shape. When I assign the custom shape pattern in the shatter effet to be my composition, it only uses the shape of the first frame of that composition and ignores the subsequent frames.

In the past, I have always used the mutliple 3D layers technique, but I am finding that this is really hitting the processing time. Also it limits your camera movement (it breaks when you to side on view).

Is there any way round this by using the shatter effect, or does anyone know of any other z-depth techniques?

    Many thanks,
    Jamie.

Sorry, you can only use stills for shape maps, otherwise AE uses the first frame only. AE isn’t capable of animating the resulting 3D shapes around the edges of the map.

I haven’t heard of any other techniques to fake extrusion. If you do a lot of this, you should buy Invig or bite the bullet and get into 3D motion graphics with Cinema 4D (for example). 3D is a big part of motion graphics now.

I looked into what you were saying, adding z-depth to something animated, and i believe i have found a solution, but it involves having you animation to have transparency, and be precomped. I will make a video tutorial explaining my technique. Can I have a copy of your animation to demonstrate?
