I need to shoot a film with a gravestone in it with specific text on it. I was wondering if it would be possible to shoot a blank gravestone and add the text afterwards using Final Cut Pro. If so, how do I do this? Thanks!

Use the Boris 3D in FC.

you may find the task more than daunting, since you will need to process the info in a 3D space that will need to track with any camera move certainly more than can be done in FCP.

Why not make a prop out of styrofoam® and paint it to look like stone?

it is one of the oldest of tricks in hollywood. It will take a person less than a day to create one – whereas with your lack of expertise in 3D, it may take you more than a couple of days to create one in post.

The trick for depth the text on the prop?
use a thinner piece of foam for the lettering face and then mount it to a larger piece for the finished prop.

Export your shot to either motion or after effects and track in there. Use your transfer modes to get the right look you are looking for, then send it back to FCP. If you have to track be sure, when you are filming, put something on the headstone that is high in contrast so that AE or motion has some pixels to lock on to.(I usually put a piece of tape on my prop)
