    Hi there,
Someone asked me to add subtitles to a couple documentaries. These are in DVD format already so i either have to extract the movie and import it in fcp or ask them to provide me the films in some other kind of format. Any ides what that should be? And also, should i use some other software apart from FCP?

Once i start adding subs (provided i have the correct translation and timing) how long do you think it ll take me for say 1h long of film? I ve done it a couple of times before (adding subs in FCP) and i think it took me about 1-2 days per hour but i might be wrong..
    Thanks

There may be some subtitling software but we just use the Text Tool in FCP to do this.

If the subtitles are provided in something like MS Word, we just copy and paste that into the movie. All our work is done in FCP, but there are ways to get a subtitle track into a DVD Authoring program. You’ll want to look into some of the DVD Authoring software forums here on the Cow for advice on that.

I think your rough timeframe of 1 to 2 days per hour is a good one. Because you’ll need to allocate time to watch the film a few times through to ensure all your titles are correctly spelled.

    Thanks Walter for the reply,
A while back I looked into extracting subtitles from FCp into a subtitle file that u can import into DVDSP. I hope i can find out again with a bit of googling..

Title Exchange Pro from Spherico FIlmtools is one tool for getting your FCP titles into DVDSP.

there are a couple of subtitling / transcription apps that can also generate the appropriate STL files for DVDSP.

have a look at InqScribe, SubBits is another.
im pretty sure there’s a Cow Article on some of the subtitling apps out there.
you’ll find it if you google it, i’m sure.

the benefit of a dedicated app for subtitled a FINISHED show is it has specific tools for EDITING
(say when you realise you want to split a line over two subtitles)
and also the big issue of SPELL-CHECKING.

Spherico also make an app for spell checking. you get it when you buy Title Exchange Pro (or maybe it’s free anyway?)
i have used it and found it great for finding small things like double spaces,
but i did find it easier to open the STL file into word or other for spell checking.

    cheers,
    nick
