  • Adding Region Code settings to an already authored DVD

Posted by Michael Schneider on May 26, 2005 at 10:30 am

    Hi there!

A client wants me to add the Region Code feature to a DVD that someone produced using an authoring app that unfortunately isn’t capable of setting Region Code bits. So, is it possible to add a specific Region Code to a region-free DVD that is already completed? Maybe some kind of IFO-editing?

    Thanks a lot,
    Michael

No–because even if you can change the ifo (which there are apps that can), you can’t include region coding on a recordable disc, only replicated ones.

You need to open up the original authoring project and enable/disable the regions as desired. Then you need to output the entire project on DLT tape, as the region coding requires the use of 2054 byte sectors, not the 2048 byte sectors available on DVD-R.

    Jim and Bill, thanks.

Would it be an option to ask the DVD manufacturer to add the region code information during the replication process? Or is this something that can only be set in the authoring app itself? If so, is delivery on DLT tape really the only way to go?

    Thanks,
    Michael

Delivery on a DLT tape is the best way to go, but there might be other options to consider depending on what the replication facility will accept and can work with. Here is a post from Trai F. on the forums here regarding output to recordable media (not playable mind you):

Replicators cannot change an authoring project in any way, even to do something such as enabling regions or copy protection. They will bounce the project back to you, telling you to check the appropriate setting in your authoring software and rewrite the DLTs.
