  • Adding metadata to clips

I understand that it’s possible to use Adobe Bridge to add metadata to individual video files. Is it possible to add metadata to clips within a file? Let me try to explain a little better:

I shoot DV using DVRack and so I end each shoot day with a bunch of hour-long AVI files. I import these AVI files into PPro and I set about watching through the clips and doing what used to be called “logging”.

Instead of making notes of the timecodes of useful bits of video, I set in- and out-points for each clip that I want I stick these files onto a sequence. I categories my clips by using different sequences for storing these clips (e.g. “interviewee talking about what they do on the weekend”, “talking about why they like product X” etc…).

Then, once I’m done “logging” I set about doing the actual edit using these categorised clips.

This system works OK for small projects but it gets complicated when I’ve got loads of categories and loads of clips. The main problem is that some clips often could go into several categories.

Is there a better way? Can I label each of these clips using metadata?

    Thanks,
    Jack

When you mark in and out points within a large clip, instead of dragging to a sequence, you can choose “make subclip” from the Clip menu.
This will create a new virtual clip based on your in and out points in the project window. Now you can easily rename these new subclips, organize them in bins and add comments to them in the project window.

If the comments columns in the project window aren’t detailed enough for you (Scene, shot\take, etc. ) you can add your own custom columns by pressing the small triangle button in the upper right corner of the project window and choosing “Edit Columns”. This also allows you to rearrange the order of the columns to your liking.

You can also mark in and out points on a clip using markers instead of in and out points. This way you can mark multiple in and out points on the same clip.

Ah, subclips! Thanks loads for the quick reply and the tip – sub clips look like they’ll be very useful.

    Thanks again,
    Jack
