adding keywords to .mts files in Bridge CS6
Posted by Dale Hersh on April 6, 2013 at 6:13 amI can not assign keywords to .mts video files (from my sony rx-100) using Bridge CS6. I not sure, but from reading, people say that you can not add keywords to AVCHD. I find this hard to believe and was wondering if anyone can help. It would really when editing in PP
Thanks in advance

April 6, 2013 at 2:10 pmOne thing to try, and this has worked for me on a number of files which wouldn’t accept metadata, is to right-click the file, and then choose Purge Cache for Selection. If this works for you, then you can do the same thing for multiple files selected using the same process.
If it doesn’t work, it means you need to add this to the Adobe Feature Request page:
https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform
I’ve added a number of these requests over time, since my workflow includes 3DS Max files, and other formats which are outside of the Adobe Family.

April 7, 2013 at 12:09 pmHello Tero,
thanks for responding and I have looked at Prelude quickly and found out how to add comments and some metadata, but no way to add specific keyworks that will be seen in Bridge or PP. Very frustrating.
So far the only workaround I have found for my problem is to transcode my .MTS file to H.264, which of course slows down the workflow.
Again thanks for the help and if you can add anything else it would be appreciated.

April 7, 2013 at 12:14 pmHi Joe,
Thanks for the reply and I will try that when I get back. I followed your link and ended up at the Photoshop family and it wouldn’t allow new users, so couldn’t do it.
I do believe that this is a shortcoming in Bridge/PP, very frustrating. If you read above the only way I have found to do this is by transcoding to h.264.
Hard to believe
Take care,
Dale

I’ve been doing some reading and experimentation, and it appears to me that since AVCHD is a propriety format, and shared as a standard between manufacturers, that it doesn’t allow for any internal storage of metadata. That said, it does allow for a metadata “sidecar”, an xmp file that goes along with the file.
While I couldn’t create one in Bridge, I tried something. I changed the file extension to .mpg, an older version of the format, and lo and behold, I was now able to create metadata within Bridge! It creates it as a sidecar, with a .xmp extension, and I couldn’t get it to show up in Premiere (the metadata, that is), although if you’re just using it to manage files in Bridge, this might work.
I know nothing about the technical ramifications of this on the file as far as quality goes – although I could see no downgrading in Premiere Pro or After Effects. Why don’t you try this out with a .mts file you’ve got backed up somewhere, and see if it works for you. You’re not transcoding, so there should be no quality loss, and you could batch rename the files in Bridge. Just a thought…

April 8, 2013 at 10:36 amThanks so much again for taking the time to help. I did try some other extensions, with very little luck but not .mtg. I’m travelling and will give it a go when I get back.
It just seems like this is an issue with the program that I’m sure Adobe knows about. Tape-less media looked to be such a great way to work (I don’t make my living doing editing-I do some videos for my company)so this was why I switched. AVCHD was on the equipment in my price range.
All was good until I started getting more and more files. This is when the start ratings didn’t go far enough and I wanted keyword, now this easy workflow has left me up the proverbial #$!# creek.
take care,
Dale Hersh
