  • Adding high-def footage to DV interviews?

I’ve been working on this project that is supposed to be a documentary. We have most of the story and interviews in order. The interviews were all shot with DV cameras.

A lot of the video footage we are going to use, which includes many shots of downtown, shots of nature and beauty, was also shot with DV cameras. But I might soon have access to high-definition cameras . I was wondering if it might be a good idea to reshoot a lot of the video footage with the high-def cameras (I’m guessing it will be able to shoot 4:3, I don’t know I’m new to high-def) as far as the nature and the town so it looks really good? I’m really wondering if the difference between the DV interviews and the footage would be too jarring? We do use high-def photos in the project already..

Once you start using HD you want everything in HD. If you can re-shot, do it.
And, no, there is no HD 4×3; all the stuff is 16×9, just need to reframe on a SD sequence.

Okay. So I would capture the HD footage normally (for whatever setting goes with that camera and tape) and just put it in a “SD sequence”? The only sequence I’ve ever used is DV. Is an “SD sequence” one of the sequence settings? All I know is right now I have the sequence rendering as DV and that I’m going to change it to ProRes eventually..

Yes, you can drop the HD stuff on the DV sequence and edit and export to the codec you want; just be careful about the field-order.
Before rendering to Prores, set “render All YUV material in High Precision”.

Okay, sounds easy, that cleared things up for me. What did you mean about the field order? I think I’ve heard HD uses upper field, not lower. So what exactly are you saying to be careful about? Thanks.
