    HI
i was wondering how do i add the effects on a movie
lets say i have a video of myself and want to create an effect of throwing a plasma ball or shooting lasers
i make the plasma ball in 3d max or any 3d software
then what? how do i put it on the video and make it look like im throwing
    it?
do i make the ball animate in the 3d package? or in AE
    thanx 4 any help

you could use the AE “beam” effect to make a laser beam…or you could use the lightning effect to cast a bolt of lighting…these can be added to your video without much trouble…you would just have to shoot a video again of you throwing something….then add the effects. To throw a ball, you would have to shoot the ball by itself against a blue screen…then take out the background, and add just the ball to the scene. Another way is to take a digital pic of the ball and use Photoshop to select just the ball, then rotate the ball in AE, etc….the tricky part will be the lighting…

YOu can do a lot in AE without using 3D for an effect like this, but if you like your 3D effect’s look, then here goes:

It depends – if you want to animate the motion of the ball, you’ll need to bring your BG footage into your 3D program and then match the motion up there.

Or you could just render the ball stanbding still (but otherwise animating it’s colors and light and rotation).

Either way, when you are done, render it out with an alpha channel (if you can get a straight alpha as opposed to a premultiplied one, that would be great) and bring it into AE.

It comes in transparent in the right places, and then you just drop it on top of your footage. If you planned on doing the motion in AE, make sure to turn on the comps motion blur (and the layer’s too) and then just animate the poition of the energy ball.
