  • Adding Colorsista to my toolbox.

I’ve been messing around with the demo version of Colorista and wanted to get others thoughts on this in light of Color being available now. My thoughts are: Color is a BIG program with a steep learning curve and it would take me much time to get up to speed on it. I don’t want to upgrade until I’m ready to do my entire system (CPU, drives, FCP Studio 2, etc) so Colorista looks like a good way to upgrade my CC tools. Do you feel Colorista is a signifigant improvement over FCP 3-way?

Yes, when a scene calls for tough color correction, Colorista will help you tremendously!

But just to do simple levels and add chroma, nothing beats Color Corrector 3-way.

I think it is a SIGNIFICANT improvement. I use it and love it. Do a test. Put the two clips on the timeline…the same clip twice. 3-way on one clip, and Colorista on another. REALLY push the color wheel. Make the lows really blue. Pump the mids to the red. see what happens. the 3-way tends to “neon” out…make the blacks no longer black, but blue. Colorista just adds blue to the blacks.

PLUS…you can do secondaries…layer colorista. So that you can vignette a spot and lighten a face or adjust the color just to a certain area.

I feel I have better control over my colors.

I’ve also noticed that in the vectorscope the 3-way leaves gaps? in the chroma info. When I used Colorista it was still continuous. Hum, seems like Colorista interpolates better.

I’ve been using Colorista for probably six months now and highly recommend it, especially given the $199 price tag. What I find is that it is cleaner than the FCP 3-Way, I can push settings much further than the 3 Way without getting that weird solarization effect the 3Way will throw up there if you go too far.

Also the Masking feature is killer right within the plugin so I don’t have to create a garbage matte.

I generally use two to three layers of Colorista on every shot. First layer to balance the shot, second layer to grade the shot to the color I want, the third layer (if necessary) to boost the color and possibly tweak the color further. Both the 3 Way and Colorista work best if you don’t try to do everything in one level of the filter.

I’ve delivered about 14 HD broadcast shows so far now CC’d with Colorista and it’s something everyone should have in their toolbox. If you know how to use FCP’s CC tools, you already know how to use Colorista.

The ONLY issue that I have with Colorista is the fact that you have to render your clip after using it. I love it but I only use it on rare occasions that call for a specific amount of CC.

When it comes to simple levels and color boosting, CC 3-way is my tool of choice. Just because I don’t have to render. If the folks at Red Giant made the next version faster, I’d probably use it all of the time.

I can put one to two layers of Colorista down in realtime on my Mac Pro system. What are you using?

Really? I have the same system as you but mine will not play in realtime with just simple corrections.

    No… That could be it.

In past versions of FCP, I found that High Quality was the way to go, but since you suggest this I’ll have to look into it.

It will drop the resolution, but you should be able to run at least one level of Colorista in realtime, depending on your array. Obviously the faster the array the more RT.
