  • Adding an effect to part of a clip

Am having trouble adding an effect to just part of a clip. I enter B for the start point and N for the end point and the markers appear on the timeline but when I add the effect it always applies it either to the start of the clip or the entire clip…….

setting the work area has nothing to do with how the effect is applied. It is more for setting your render/preview length.

If you want to apply an effect to only a part of the layer there are a few things you can do:

    1. Slit the layer (ctrl+shift+d) once or twice and only apply effect to the part you want

    2. apply the effect, and then use keyframes within the effect to say when to have it on or off

    3. put an adjustment layer only over the time to want to effect….then add your effect to the adjustment layer.

    4. There are most likely more ways to do this, but these are just a couple that came to mind

    Indeed.

#1 (split the clip) works all the time, but is a little cumbersome when you want to change the on/off point, as you have to change the in/out points of two layers.
#2 doesn’t work well with some effects, as they sort of “linger”. To switch on/off, use hold keyframes. Check the help.
#3 will affect all layers below the adjustment layer, just to let you know.
