Adding an effect to multiple clips/items
Posted by Ronan Jones on August 1, 2008 at 10:15 amFor example I have a dozen clips and PNG graphics on my time line – is there a way I can apply a filter to a number of these at once with other having to hit Event FX to each clip in particular..
thanks…

August 1, 2008 at 10:21 amAdd your effects to the first clip and when this is done, copy this clip. Next, select the second clip up to the last one, context (right) click and choose for the option PASTE ATTRIBUTES. All the other clips will have the same effects pasted onto them.

Is there a way to narrow the attributes that are copied and pasted from clip to clip? I find myself wanting to paste an effect but not a pan/crop sizing attribute. Also, I’ve noticed a color correction attribute pasted onto another clip will not overwrite an existing color correction setting, but will be added to that correction. Any way to deal with that? Thanks. -

August 2, 2008 at 9:55 amNo, I don’t know anyway to use PASTE ATTRIBUTES to copy only a part of the effects onto a new clip or to replace an existing effect. PASTE ATTRIBUTES always adds all effects. So if you have to COPY-PASTE ATTRIBUTES to a lot of clips, you will have to do this before you add any other effect. It means carefully planning the project…
Although there is a simple way to bypass the effect of copying all the effects: just temporarily uncheck the effects you don’t want to copy in the FX window before copying. Now these effects will be copied onto the other clips, but they won’t be active or visable in your output video.

August 2, 2008 at 4:47 pmThanks Theo, that is helpful and I hadn’t thought of doing that. Any ideas on how to copy and paste attributes without pasting pan/crop/mask settings? Mask can be disabled by unchecking the mask box, but pan/crop/size has no box.

August 2, 2008 at 10:15 pmOK, if you really want, there are always ways to avoid COPY/PASTE the PAN/CROP settings to the target clips. First make a copy of your project. Next go in your original project to the clip that you want to use as the source for PASTE ATTRIBUTES and and set PAN/CROP to normal by context clickig in the PAN/CROP window and selecting RESTORE. Perform your PASTE/ATTRIBUTE to all the receiving clips. When that is done, open Vegas for a second time with the back-up project open and COPY-PASTE ATTRIBUTES the PAN/CROP settings back to the donor clip in the original project.

August 4, 2008 at 12:53 amI may have missed something but if you want the same effect on every clip, why not put the effect in the track effect chain instead of the event effect chain? Danny Hays

August 4, 2008 at 7:01 amOfcourse when you would like to have the effects on ALL the clips, that’s the easiest way. But it is not very clear wheter this is what Larry wanted to do.
