  • Adding a text clip to event library?

Posted by Greg Fulcher on October 3, 2011 at 8:02 pm

    Hi, All..

I’m about 10 days into my FCP.X Free Trial, and giving it some serious attention to see if it’s up to the task at hand.
Like many of you, I am both intrigued and frustrated.

One of the ‘problems’ I’m having is regarding adding created content, in this case a series of disclaimers created with the Type Tool in FCP.X, to the Event Library. These are recurring items across 15 videos produced on a monthly basis, so it’s important to template-ize the process as much as possible.

I want to add them to the client-specific event library in a folder named “elements”, which contains other frequently-used assets (from outside of FCP).

    Is this even possible?

I’ve tried dragging said text clip from the time line to the browser, copying/pasting, making new compound clip… to no avail.

My workaround will simply be to create them in Photoshop and import as files and assign keywords — I just didn’t know if I’m missing something here — that being FCP.X’s ability to use assets created within itself as elements in the Event Library.

    Thanks in advance,
    -greg

I think for title templates you would use Motion 5 to create them.

Look at somebody like Ripple Training to get some idea how this works.

    If you have Motion 5:

Build the disclaimers in Motion as a Title Effect. Save into FCPX and create a Theme based around your client (in the Save As dialogue). Disclaimers will appear in the Themes browser in FCPX; apply as necessary.

If you DON’T have Motion 5:

Create an empty compound clip in the Event browser. Copy/paste the disclaimers into the compound clip. Titles now live inside a compound clip in the event.

I’m having problems making a new compound clip in the event browser when nothing is selected. It remains grayed out until a select something in the event browser. I wonder if this changed in 10.0.1.

    All the best,

    Tom

Tom, I looked into what you mentioned and you’re right, it IS grayed out occasionally. It feels like a bug. Here’s what you can do though.

    Option 1:

Select a keyword collection if you have one. If no clip is selected, but the Event Library is active as opposed to the Event Browser, compound clip is available.

    Option 2:

Select any clip in your event browser and then click in an empty space or CMD click the same clip to deselect everything. Then compound clip should be available.

Hi Andy, thanks for your advice. I do have Motion 5 and have built many-a-template with it over the years, but wanted to see if it was possible to keep it within the FCP.X ecosystem entirely — some of the editors I hire aren’t proficient with Motion and are curious if they can use FCP.X for jobs I send their way.

The workaround you suggested, adding a new Compound Clip to the event browser, works intermittently as Tom discovered, too. I have found that it works right after relaunching the application (I’m still using a Trial version, mind you) but not after editing for a while. I’ve also found that every hour or so, the position bar becomes unresponsive / fails to update it’s position. After this occurs, much of the functionality diminishes, including the Make New Compound Clip.

Anyhow, where was I. Right. I created a new keyword collection in an “Elements” folder for the project event and was able to copy/paste the title clips into them one by each, tag ’em, assign roles and then drag ‘n drop them into the edit.

    Thanks again for the tip…

    Cheers to you all!
