  • Adding a reflection to sunglasses

Hi, I’m new to After Effects so I would like some help for an effect that I would like to use in a project:

I want to make a take of a mannequin wearing sunglasses (please don’t ask why) in a green screen, making emphasis in the sunglasses; wwhat I want is to create a reflection in the sunlasses that is completley independient from the rest.

What I am thinking is that I can put the video that I want to be reflected on the sunglasses on a separated layer, but then I don’t know how to make it look realistic as a reflection in this surface; any ideas? Right now I have no idea on how to do this so all ideas are welcome. I will be grateful if anyone can help me…

I know Andrew Kramer touches the subject a little bit on his “Magic Glass” tutorial

    hi there,

you can just put your video over your sunglases (drop opacity to center). then use the mask tool on your videolayer to create the same shape as your glases. when that’s done. you can play with the video-layer transfer modes like”add” or “lighten” or whatever looks good. for a more realistic you could do some tricks seen on videocopilot tutorials, or think some of yourself. it depends on the lighting of your glases and your footage.

Another way is to cut some blue paper in the shape of the glasses lenses and tape them over the lenses. then Use the Keylight plugin to key out the blue and let the unlying track show through, dropping the opacity of the refection track and shrinking it down as thats what the reflection of the bow in the lens would do. The reason I say blue is the maniquin is already in front of a green screen right?

That’s a very good solution… I didn’t thought about that, I think I’m gonna do that and then put ’em a nice effect so they look more realistic. Thanks!.

Doesnt have to be blue… You could always mask the glasses to isloate their key separate from the green sceen and use green for the key on both. All depends on what your light is like, and what colors your other subjects in the shot have in them.
