Adding a dissolve over every cut in a photo show
Posted by Forrest Love on January 26, 2009 at 8:28 pmI know this is a simple question. I’m adding a chapter to my sisters wedding DVD which is basically a slideshow with 200+ pictures which needs 200 dissolves. What is the best/most efficient way to do this?

January 26, 2009 at 8:49 pmI don’t think it is possible to select all the cuts and add a dissolve to all of them at once. I think the best thing to do is:
Go the “Effects” tab (not the effects menu). Open the “Video Transitions” folder. Choose “Cross Dissolve.” Change “Length” to the desired amount. Select “Cross Dissolve.” Right Click>Set Default Transition.
Go to the timeline. Select a cut>right click>add transition ‘cross dissolve’
Unfortunately you can only do one cut at a time, but at least all you have to do is right click on it. I feel this is the fast way, but maybe someone knows of a faster way that I haven’t discovered yet.

January 26, 2009 at 9:14 pmOh, and just wanted to note that you don’t actually have to click on the edit. Your playhead just has to be aligned to the edit for the add default transition to work. Use the up and down arrow keys to navigate between edits. If you have good rhythm you could get through it pretty quick.

January 26, 2009 at 9:41 pmI think that you can do this to the entire timeline. Try this…
1. Set your default transition.
2. Select every clip in your timeline.
3. Drag the selection to the canvas and drop onto the “overwrite with transition” overlaydone!

January 26, 2009 at 10:08 pmThe other option is to use iPhoto to do the slideshow for you. Each picture will be the same length and you can set the dissolve as the transition.
I’m doing this right now on over 800 family photos that my mother wants on a DVD. There was no way I was going to edit that many photos in FCP!
Cheers,
Jamie
