Activity Forums Panasonic Cameras adding

    Hello all,

I’m primarily an editor, so I only know a little about shooting DV.

Is there a way for a person to imbed a signal, make a mark, or otherwise electronically note a spot on a tape as it’s being recorded?
    If so:
    A. Do most (professional) miniDV cameras have this capablity, or only some (Specifically the Panasonic DVX100)?
    B. is there a way to so note, mark or signal remotely; or does the camera operator have to be the one to perform the action?

FYI- the application here is a group discussion, where the moderator would like to indicate that the video to follow and/or precede the mark is of specific interest.
The idea is to quickly select the best clips without having to review the entire tape in real time.

    Thanks,

    TimTaylor

The Panasonic HVX200 has the capability to mark takes good or bad, but not any DV cameras that I know of. This is typically a human’s job.

[TimTaylor] “Is there a way for a person to imbed a signal, make a mark, or otherwise electronically note a spot on a tape as it’s being recorded?

Yes, on the DVX100 there’s an “index” button that will create an invisible mark on the tape at the spot you pressed it. On the 100A and 100B the same capability is there, but the “index” button is replaced by a “user3” button, so you’d have to go into the menus and assign “index” to one of the user buttons in order to be able to execute the “index” feature.

In post you can search for those indexes by using the infrared remote control; it has the ability to do an “index search”.

[TimTaylor] “is there a way to so note, mark or signal remotely; or does the camera operator have to be the one to perform the action?”

Has to be the camera operator or someone standing next to the cam who can press the appropriate button.

Index sounds like exactly what you’d want then. It seems most suited for marking the end of a good take (because, hey, how do you know a segment’s “good” until you’ve shot it? 😉

    Thanks Barry!

Index sounds like it’ll work just fine. I’ll give that a try.
