  • Adding 1080 60i to 720 24p project

Posted by Bill Evelyn on March 28, 2013 at 8:23 pm

    Hello,

I’ve got 2 different formats to mix in one project, 1080 60i & 720 24p. If I want the whole shebang in 24p, are there are difficulties I am going to encounter using FCP 7?

    Thank you, in advance…

The bigger challenge is mixing I and P.
But it’ll work out fine, which do you have more of?
    The final destination?

    Hi, Chris

Significantly more “I” than “P.” Ultimately, it will be edited and spit out as a Quicktime for broadcast.

What are the specs for the delivery? Broadcast is still 29.97. That, mixed with the fact that you have more 1080i than 720p would suggest you convert the 720p to 1080i. Which will actually look better than removing pulldown where none exists…converting 1080i to 720p…and then back to 1080i for broadcast.

I would edit in a 1080i/60i sequence and drop your 720p footage into that sequence and res up. Look at it and see how it looks.

[Chris Tompkins] ” and drop your 720p footage into that sequence and res up”

Uh…I would do things PROPERLY and use Compressor to upconvert that footage, adding pulldown and interlacing properly. I would not do what Chris suggests.

    (sorry Chris)

Shane has the big question here – what are your delivery specs. If the delivery specs are 720/60p or 1080/30i you should work in your delivery timebase. 24p converts to 60p and 30i fairly well, but you don’t want to have to take 30i down to 24p. As Dave suggested, that kind of conversion is best done clip-to-clip with a motion analysis plugin like Twistor.

People get a hard on for 24p. I understand it looks nice, but don’t forget logic when establishing your workflow. Converting from 24p works well, converting to 24p isn’t as easy going.
