Add transition to b-roll clip
Posted by Jeff Krieger on May 14, 2014 at 10:36 pmHi, when I try to add a transition (flip, e.g.) to a b-roll clip, FCP applies the transition to the a-roll as well. What am I doing wrong?

May 14, 2014 at 11:32 pmSome transition effects require an A / B side clips. If you apply it to a connected clip by itself then FCPX will use the clip below as the B side.
To avoid this, you need to set the B side as a gap or empty space. You can do this by enclosing the connected clip as a compound, or by putting it in a secondary storyline and adding a gap clip to the end.
Hope this helps.

November 6, 2014 at 8:44 pmJust ran into this problem again, and I tried your advice but it didn’t work. I tried creating a separate story line as well as creating a compound clip. It still flips the a-roll, too. Any advice?

did you make sure the effect is applied within the compound? Not on top of the compound?

November 6, 2014 at 9:17 pmHard to say what the problem could be without seeing your project. Can you take a couple screenshots and also let me know what transition you’re using?
Screenshot your main project with the playhead halfway through the transition so I can see how it’s affect the primary clip. Then step into your compound clip (the connected clip that you made into a compound) so I can see how the transition has been applied, whether there’s gap or what have you.

Thanks so much for your help. Check out this other post. The new transition works like a charm…
You’re not doing anything wrong. It’s the way the transition is built. Try this:
