  • Add mask to only one layer …

Posted by Thomas Gabrielsen on February 8, 2006 at 5:32 pm

    Hi!

I think it will be hard for me to explain this, but I want to mask a mask that mask away the layer below, but not the layer below that. Here is an example:

1 – I have one layer with a newspaper background (“newspaper layer”)
2 – Above that I have the text in the newspaper (“text layer”)
3 – I want the newspaper to be animated from the right side and move over the screen to the left
4 – Then I want the text to be invisible until the newspaper reach an invisible line in the middle of the screen, and then I want the text to be visible as it moves passing that (invisible) line.

The way i wanted to do this is to ad a mask that hides the “text layer” in a defined area, but not the “newspaper layer” below the “text layer”.

I hope this was understandable and someone can give me a tip.

    Thanks,
    Thomas Gabrielsen

ok, the first line should be something like this: “… I want to add a layer with a mask that hides only the layer below (and not the layer(s) below that).”

BTW, the effect I’m trying to explain exist in Macromedia Flash.

    🙂

You want to employ a track matte.

First put the text layer above the newspaper layer where you want it.

Parent the text to the newspaper (parent column in the timeline, pickwhip or select from drop down).

Animate the position of the newspaper across the screen, the text layer above should stay affixed.

Now make a new solid layer (Ctrl Y), any color.
Draw your mask on the solid layer.

Now in the modes column under TrkMat, select alpha matte for the text layer, the solid layer with mask layer’s little eye will go out and they will merge into a track matte.

This should reveal the text on the paper as it passes under the mask (the mask being the shape you create with the pen tool or the rectangular or elliptical mask tools). To reverse the reveal, select Alpha Inverted Matte in the Modes Column.

Any trouble look up track mattes in AE Help.
