Is there an easy way in AE, like there is in Final Cut Pro, to simply press a button so that a marker shows up at that point in the timeline?

    Thanks,

“*” (asterisk) on the numeric keypad, even works during ram preview (“0”, numeric pad) or audio preview (“.”, numeric pad).

You can also hold down the shift key and press 1, 2, etc and add markers on the timeline. Then just press that number by itself to jump to that point in time.
