  • Add light to text with the ramp effect applied

    Hello everyone,

I’m pretty new to After Effects, so I’m hoping someone can explain this to me. I have a text layer with the “ramp” effect added to give it a gradient. I made the text layer a 3D layer, added a new light layer, but the light won’t affect the text layer. If I turn off the ramp effect, then the light will affect the text layer.

I’m having a hard time understanding why this would be. Thanks.

i believe effects are applied after lights. Try precomping the text layer (with ‘move attributes into precomp’ selected), as AE will now treat the text as an image with an alpha channel, rather than text with effects applied. To change the text, just go into the precomp.

[Bruce Wainer] “i believe effects are applied after lights.”

Effects are not normally applied after lights, however a text layer is a special case.

Text layers are continuously rasterized. As a result the effect will override the light. If you pre-compose the text layer the light will work. In that case you can apply the Ramp effect on the text layer inside the pre-comp or on the comp itself in the main composition. It will work either way.
