Adaptor/Filter size on new HPX170
Posted by Christopher Wright on October 8, 2008 at 8:53 pmI had two quick questions for Jan.
On the new HPX170, does it have the same filter size as the old 100B?
In other words can the Schneider 2x lens adaptors designed for the 100B work on the new HPX?
Also I noticed that the firewire connection is a 6 pin “locking” and on the back of the camera versus being a 4 pin FW on the side like HVX-200. Is there a special cable that comes with the camera, or will any 6 pin FW cable work and lock onto the HPX??
Does the HPX also take the same type battery as the HVX-200?

So the Schneider 2X for the 100b should work, right?Dual 2.5 G5, IO, Kona LH, IO, Medea Raid, UL4D, NVidia 6800, 4Gig RAM

October 13, 2008 at 1:36 amAny SD add-on lenses will look like cr&p on the HPX. Jan Crittenden has stated this numerous times. Not sure also but the bayonet mount on the HPX170 is different than the DVX.
If your Scnheider mounts on the filter threads, it will fit but will look terrible. If it mounts on the bayonet, I don’t think it will mount to the HPX.
None of the biggies (Century, 16X9, etc.) even have add-on lenses for the HPX170 on the market yet.

I am curious though. Where did you see any post from Jan talking about this issue?? I did a search on the Cow before I posted this, and didn’t see a single post on the issue, only one about Red Rock filters and vignetting. Are you also talking from personal experience about this issue?? Have you ever used any adaptor lenses on your HVX before?
Filters and glass are glass, it really shouldn’t make a difference if one is used on an SD or HD camera should it?? It surely hasn’t mattered on some Sony SD and HD cameras I have swapped lens adaptors with. Again have you personally experienced this quality degradation yourself?Dual 2.5 G5, IO, Kona LH, IO, Medea Raid, UL4D, NVidia 6800, 4Gig RAM

October 13, 2008 at 6:48 pmThere are many posts over on the DVX User board about this exact subject. Jan Crittenden and Barry Green have both posted about this issue and I agree with them.
I own a DVX100 and up until last week had an HVX200. I own the Century fisheye and .6 WA add lens for the DVX and I tried it on the HVX with a step-up ring. Looked like hell.
For filters, I agree with you, there are no such things as HD filters. But for add-on lenses, I disagree. Interview any video/film optics designer (talk to the Schneider guys, I did in an interview for some magazines that I write for) and ask them if there is any difference in glass designed for SD and for HD. SD glass is designed to resolve at SD resolutions of 480/576 lines. HD glass is designed to resolve HD resolutions of 1080 lines. Chromatic aberration and spherical aberration levels are significantly different between SD and HD glass, this is why the CAC technology was implemented on the HPX500.
That said, there is beauty in the eye of the beholder. Many people are successfully shooting HD with SD glass on the HPX500 in particular because it doesn’t make financial sense to put a $25,000.00 HD lens on an $8,000.00 body.
IMHO, add-on lenses are a large compromise in quality by default, regardless of manufacturer. I have always noticed degradation with any add-on lens, even the expensive ones I used to rent for my Betacam. Feel free to try it out, it may be acceptable for your purposes and your eye. But both Barry and Jan and the lens manufacturers feel otherwise. I searched on DVX user for the specific threads but could not locate, there are already many thousands of posts on the HPX170 over there, If I recall, it was not in a thread about the add-on lenses specifically, it was in some general thread about the 170 and a couple guys chimed in with their plans about using their DVX add-on fisheyes and WAs on the 170 and Jan and Barry recommended against it.

October 13, 2008 at 8:12 pmThanks for the added clarification. I haven’t used or bought an add on for the Panny cameras yet, and only need a 1.6 X for a very specific gig, where I won’t be panning or zooming at all. It is good to hear your real life feedback on using them.
