    Hi all,

We are in the process of converting from Avid’s Nitris DX system to an Adobe Production Suite based system. The majority of our work is now all digital recorded via P2 or Ikegami camera, but we have a huge archive of Beta tape that is often useful for historical purposes or filler as we work to rebuild our library in HD. I have been doing a bit of experimenting to make sure we will still be able to utilize our deck with an Adobe system. It seems that the Nitris DX box is taking care of analog to digital conversion when capturing from or digitizing to tape.

Rather purchasing another standalone A/D converter, I came across this:

Would this or something like it allow for capture? We are looking at getting a new tower to run the new system, but are considering reusing our Avid tower if possible which would definitely require hardware like the above. Is there a new tower that might include the A/D converter built in? Any recommendations?

    Thanks!

We are currently archiving our library of BetaSP tapes, and we’re using a Blackmagic Intensity Pro and a Matrox MX02 Mini. Both work well with Premiere Pro, but we’ve found that the native capture apps do well also.

Thanks for your reply. Looks like Blackmagic could do the trick if need be.

As far as native capture apps…is there a built in A/D coverter? I did a quick test earlier today with my Adobe Production laptop which is a Dell Precision M4500 with an i7 core. Basically I unplugged the RS422 input on our Avid tower, which is connected via USB-serial converter, and plugged it in via USB to my laptop. It seemed the laptop recognized there was a device there, but I was not able to get Premiere to an ‘online deck status’ I’m assuming I’m missing the A/D converter to allow Premiere to utilize the deck, but perhaps I am wrong?

    Thanks,
    Lindsay

Not analog sources – that card is for digital only. Among Decklink cards, Decklink Studio is the one that does both digital and component analog.

As Steve Brame suggested, MXO2 Mini, Intensity Pro and Intensity Shuttle will also work (and are less expensive) if you don’t need SDI or XLR.

Either option will work. You can equip your existing system with Decklink Studio or a similar option, or you can order a tower from a systems integrator that already has it built-in.

AJA is another option for I/O for PPro.

    I use an LHi card.

Very good equipment. Solid signal quality.

Thanks for your responses. It appears there is a plethora of options to choose from. So I’m guessing this isn’t feasible, but is it by chance possible to utilize a Nitris DX I/O with PPro rather than Avid?

That would make my life much easier, but I’m afraid that I’m hopelessly optimistic on this one.

    Thanks,

Never heard of it being done outside of hiring a Russian hacker (not me) – those seem to be able to just about anything.

We switched from Media Composer to Premiere Pro. Though we didn’t use a Nitris DX, we did use a Mojo I/O from Avid, and I’d seriously doubt that you could connect Avid specific hardware to another editing platform.
