Just designed a intricate comp of about 12 3d layers (subcomps)using the default active camera as my view.

But, now I would like to add camera movement. Nothing too crazy.

For this comp I really like the field of view and perspective of the default active camera. Makes sense, since I designed from that perspective.

How would I get a custom camera to duplicate the settings of the active camera? Is this information anywhere? (film size, angle of view, zoom, etc)

Then, is there an easy way to position this camera exactly where the default active camera is positioned? It would be great to use that as my starting point for a few simple moves.

Am I correct in assuming there is no way to animated position and rotation of the active camera? It certainly is not a layer in the project.

Hmmm, I usually add a camera to the scene first, and add a camera no matter whether it will be animated or not. You can’t get Depth of Field or other camera attributes such as rotation and position without having a camera layer. You say that you want to “duplicate” the settings of the Active Camera but you don’t have a camera in the scene, so you can’t have actually done anything to the Active Camera yet – since there are no settings to modify… Having said all that, have you tried just adding a new camera with it’s default settings?

Yes. I have added one camera and tweaked some settings. Unable to figure out how to duplicate the position, angle and field of view of the just the after effects default view (without adding a camera).

Yes, I know I should of added a camera first, but this started out as a 2D comp which sort went of in other direction.

So, just trying to add a camera which matches the “no camera” default view of AE.

I thought just adding a default camera would do that. I just did a test and it worked okay. Perhaps if you delete your preferences then try adding a camera with it’s default settings to your comp it may work. Otherwise I’m wondering whether this may be a question for the AE engineers, maybe there are settings they know of that you can use to exactly match the active camera of a 3D comp with no camera layer…

The default camera has a 50 mm lens, the zoom is set to 900pixels and the z position is -900

This will be the same as the default camera. If you have allready added your camera you can just do a reset on all values for the camera options by pressing aa then doing a reset for all properties and then doing a reset for position.

    Perfect.

Had a feeling someone had been there and done that.

Just clarify for anyone reading this now and in the future. The default camera settings are indeed as Sam.mltn has explained. Keep in mind that changes based on the size of the comp you are using so 900 is fine for a 720 x 480 comp but for 720 x 576 for example, the figure is actually 1066.7. As long as you follow the instructions and do a reset everything will look fine.

I want to thank Sam for posting those settings again. They really worked and helped me get a job done. THANKS.

Updating this in 2022: If you want to match the default camera in a comp without one (whatever your comp resolution), just add a camera and check the “Create Camera From Current View” checkbox in the lower left of the new camera creation box to match the existing settings.
