acquiring 720p at 30fps
Hello Creative Cow Forum Folk,
I have been happily producing along in SD and recently attempted to move on to HD since my JVC HD-110U is capable of shooting at 720p.
I shot test footage with the camera set for 720P and then set up my Media 100 to acquire 720P footage. The problem appears to be the JVC flavor of 720P is 30 fps while Media 100 Producer’s (version 13.0.1 for PPC) idea of 720P is 59.94 fps or 60 fps except that the 60 choice is not active – it is grayed out.
Can anyone tell me if I am dead in the water – need a new camera or a new system? FCP? Or will some import hardware help, say a Black Magic card at $199?
Anyone who has a clue, please help me out with an answer. I wanna grow up to HD but I like my JVC and I have been a happy Media100 user since around 1997.

“Hmmm, the 720p formats are usually 59.94, even if it is called 30p in the camera. Have you tried acquiring via the 59.94p setting? Have you checked if there maybe is a downconverter for FireWire turned on in the camera? I guess you try to acquire via FireWire…

If you’re using a card reader to upload your file, in your Media 100 preferences, Video Input, try Source In>None. Then in the Media Standard options I pick 720p 29.97. But if you’re using firewire out of the camera, I don’t think this will work.

Oops, I just re-read your post and I realized the JVC 110 is tape-based, and I was thinking you were using a card to record. Sorry. What I suggested probably wouldn’t work.

Well it would seem to the uninitiated (me perhaps)that these formats are not interchangeable. Even Media 100 Producer offers to acquire in two flavors 720P 60 or 720P 59.94. You figure if this is the same it would not list them separately. Marketing material addressing capability also lists 30 and 60 separately alluding to the idea that it is distinct, and that it is 30 frames per second versus 60 frames per second – not the same thing.
Is not the difference between the 4 possible 720p formats frame rate and drop and non – drop?
I thought I understood:
720p 60 – 720 progressive at 60fps non drop frame
720P 59.94 – 720 progressive at 60fps drop frame
720p 30 – 720 progressive at 30fps non drop frame
720p 29.97 – 720 progressive at 30fps drop frameSo if this is so, they are not compatible and can cause me the kind of trouble I have been having. Am I wrong? Why does Media 100 Producer have an acquire selection that says 720p 60 that is there but unavailable and a setting that says 720p 59.96?
Will an upgrade to Media1oo Studio change this?
