Well, Windows XP is the first problem if you want stability 🙂
Seriously, I have a AMD Athlon XP dual core 4200+ HP with 1 gig of RAM and it seems to run pretty smoothly for standard definition work. I use external USB 2 drives.
If you are doing HDV you probably want to read some of the other posts and need a better setup.
