Accidently formatted card – Can it be restored?

Hi Frank,
If you haven recorded nothing in the card I think you can do it.
Try in a Mac with DataRescue.
If you can not do it look for somebody with a PC.
There are much more tools to do that in Windows that in a Mac.

As Rafael says, there are several recovery tools to try.
I’ve heard some people have had luck on the Windows side with “Undelete”

BTW this is why I think formating cards is a risk. Deleting all clips takes a few more steps whether in camera or from the ClipBrowser.

At NAB I spoke with Lou Schmidt from Hoodman and he gave me this companies name as a good data recovery resource.

After calling and talking with tech support they said the issue with video is larger file become fragmented and that is where the chain is lost to complete the file. I have read and experienced recovering only a few seconds of video then it stops. This company has a free demo but it wouldn’t recover the files I tested and I called them back and they said I either need to purchase it to find out if it works or send in the data and they can work with it. They did say they would like to experiment with the raw EX mp4 files and I’m going to send them an SDHC card this week so they can work directly with these files.

A couple of weeks ago I used DataRescue in an HD of mine. I’ve go shocked.
it recovered files that i have deleted months ago. Full QT movies. Incredible.
The thing is that with a normal formating you don’t touch at all the contents of the driver.
You just delete the directories/catalogs or whatever that points to the files, but the files are still there.
SanDisk have a little application to recover files from the Flash cards. Works only in PC.
What is important is don’t write nothing else in card.

I couldn’t get the Sandisk utility that came with my CF cards to work with SxS. It’s an older version though; maybe newer versions will work. It didn’t see the SxS card as a valid drive (using the Sony USB card reader).

I once read that simply deleting files from a memory card, rather than formatting, introduces a risk of speed loss due to fragmentation. Formatting marks the entire card as available. I tried to do a quick search to corroborate this but didn’t find anything definitive.
