    Hi,

I accidentally recorded footage on my Canon 60d at a frame rate of 1/160 instead of 1/60 (it was very early and I was tired). When i converted to Pro-res and tried to work with it in Final Cut Pro 6 on my Macbook Pro ( 2.26 GHz, intel Core 2 duo, 4 gb 1333 mhz ddr 3 Ram) It was really choppy and it seems as though FCP was just having trouble even playing it. the playhead would stall, and then jump ahead.

My question is: Could this be speed of the computer problem (I have the project on an external hard drive– Lacie Rugged) or did I just totally screw everything up by shooting at this frame rate and will have to shoot it over. It played beautifully on my camera when I reviewed it.

Any help would be appreciated as this is a paying client and I would hate to have to shoot it over.

    Thanks,

    Lee

That is the SHUTTER SPEED…not the FRAME RATE. The camera does not shoot 160fps.

The high shutter rate is causing the choppy look. Nothing can be done about that…it’s baked into the footage.

Second that, I wish it shot at 160fps it would make quite a nice slow motion. Now, the fast shutter speed will give you the stacatto look but as far as I know it would not cause any problems with playback. Have you edited with that laptop/hdd/codec set up before with good results?

Sorry, shutter speed.. that’s what I meant. guess I’m still tired.

I use that mac/hdd/codec set up before with no problems. The only difference is that this footage was shot with a high shutter speed.

A high shutter speed will give a slightly more choppy look but playhead stalling and jumping ahead sounds like something else. That MBP spec is a bit slow compared to the more recent ones, but ought to handle it.

Has your Lacie got a decent amount of space on it (thing slow down a lot when they get near to being full)?

Which connector are you using (USB won’t handle it, you really want FW800 oe esata connections if you’ve got either of them)?

“Reel Smart Motion Blur” will add the motion blur you missed on camera.

Amazing little plugin. Was just going to suggest that. Great for progressive. But buggy for interlaced. The results seem- confused.

What about using Twixtor interpolation software to blend between the frames?

I use firewire 800 and the drive has around 100gb free. I’m going to try it today on a faster computer and see what happens. i followed the same procedure as I usually do–except the shutter speed was higher than it should have been. It’s for a wedding “music video” so a unique look is fine– but at this point I can’t even edit it.

I’ll check back later once I check it on other computers.

    Thanks so much everyone!

So I brought it to work and tried it on one of their imac 2ghz and it plays fine. Not sure why my macbook pro doesn’t want to handle it but Im just super relieved that I don’t have to trash the whole project. Phew….. thanks everyone. I am going to look into the software that will help add motion blur.. anyone have any experience with a specific one ? Any special tricks I need to know?

    Again, thanks everyone!

You just replied to a post suggesting one. That post was a reply to 2 other posts suggesting another.
