  • Accidentally renamed file ‘Name’ in Log and Transfer

Hey everyone, I’ve almost got a full edit done on a feature film I’m working on…but have a problem with how I’ve ingested files into FCP from the Log and Transfer window…and my DP actually warned me of this after seeing what I had done…

So before I ingested any of the files from the Log and Transfer window, I renamed each file (ie. 00856H or 01BHLQ) to the scene number and take (ie. S 34 – 7). Was I supposed to leave these alone and instead rename under the “Scene:” field with each clip? I’m worried because my DP said that if my drive were to crash then all of the files would revert back to whatever number it was in the first place (ie. 00856H or whatever). Is there anyway to fix this at this point? even if I have to rename every file somehow?

I obviously just don’t want to lose all the incredible number of editing hours because of this if something were to happen.

    Thanks very much, David

    No this is not true.

If you were take a clip off line and then batch capture it, as long as you have the proper P2 card loaded in the Log and Transfer window, it will recapture the clip regardless if it reverted back to the original file name.

In fact you can select a clip and under the sprocket pulldown select “Revert to original Metadata ” and you will see that the original clip name will once again appear. You can still select your offline clip and batch capture, and it will still capture the proper clip even thought it has its orginal name in the log and capture window. It will not change the name of the your clip either.

Take a look at this video from creative cow and you will see what I am talking about at the end of the tutorial.

    Hope this helps.

Wow! Perfect, thanks Joseph! Makes me feel SOOOOOOO much better. Amazing too…it reverts back to the original metadata to find the file but doesn’t actually change the name back to that…which is exactly what I was worried about.

    Thanks!

P2 is solid. You can rename it now or later in the finder or in FCP and since the metadata and clipIDs are so strong, FCP will know what to do.

DSLRs on the other hand….not so much.

One last thing, I’m assuming that when saying your P2 card needs to be in the Log and Transfer window when you batch capture the offline footage….that we’re not talking about loading from the ACTUAL P2 card but just the raw files from the cards that have been transfered already and are on a hard drive…

That’s right. Always make a backup on to a drive.

That’s correct. The folder you copied you P2 info into.
