Can someone shed some light on the issue of the academic versions of Sony Vegas Pro?

Are they the same? Will I be able to upgrade to a new nonacademic version using my license to an academic version in the future?

There’s NO difference between the two versions and you won’t have any problems upgrading in the future.

I’m using the Academic Editions of both Vegas Studio 9 PE and Pro 9. As far as I can tell they’re exactly the same as the ‘full price’ trials I tried out. There’s nothing during the installation process to indicate that it’s a special version.

I noticed Amazon (UK) appeared to be selling the academic versions (at a significant discount) to anyone who puts them in their basket so I took a risk, first on Movie Studio, then on Pro. As a last resort I knew I could ask one of the primary schools I make videos for (and whose computers I look after, that’s my day job) to register it for me if it required any proof of academic status, but unlike some UK retailers and some software, none was needed.

Just go ahead and take the discount! As for upgradeability, only Sony can say, but if I were a betting man I’d put money on it not being a problem, in fact the academic upgrade should be cheaper :).

“in fact the academic upgrade should be cheaper :).”

I started off with the academic version and that was the only time it was cheaper.
From that point onwards, I always pay the same upgrade price as everyone else.
I should add that, if you buy the upgrade within a month of any new version release, you save a substantial amount of money 🙂

Thanks Mike for those tips, it’s a shame the academic upgrades haven’t been cheaper, as I said they should be! I hope it’s quite a while before I need to shell out for an upgrade, I really like the Vegas 9 I’ve got (except the powerful but very un-userfriendly and unintegrated ProType Titler, of which I’ve written a long list of its faults as I came across them if anyone at Sony would like a copy…).
