AC-3 to HDCAM SR from the timeline, is this possible? we’re using a kona 3.

our delivery spec is worded as follows, “Track 1/2: Primary Dolby Digital audio program, AC-3 Encoded, full 5.1 channel release using ‘3/2 L’ encoding mode.”

there’s some debate over whether or not this is possible in the latest FCP. we’d like to avoid an audio layback.

I don’t think FCP will even recognize an AC-3 file.

I have had to do this a few times for delivery (to D5, not HDCAM SR). It cannot be done from FCP timeline even with a hardware encoder between FCP and the HDCAM SR deck. The main reason is because the audio has to be offset 32ms to compensate for the Dolby decode. I do not think there is a way to move audio a specific number of ms in FCP. If you could, then you could rent a Dolby AC-3 Encoder & Decoder for your layback. I ended up doing it in ProTools and using Dolby plug-ins instead of renting Dolby hardware.

as george says this is not possible with FCP.

FCP cannot directly handle Dolby’s digitally encoded files.

However you can lay the ProTools completed file to tape using the AJA VTR exchange.app

can the AJA VTR app do the 32ms offset or does that need to be done in the file output from protools?

Dolby audio content needs to be encoded by certified Dolby equipment.

I said the the VTR app could lay the file to tape- thats all it does

the file needs to be properly prepared by something else.
