Abstract animated waves
How would one create animated waves similar to the example below? Would plugins be required?

One way of doing it with only AE plugins would be to create various curved shapes, turn those layers to 3D layers, animate a smooth movement (rotate, translate in 3d space- even animate the shape itself), then apply motion blur, glow and some echo and color correction.
