About to burn 2 hrs on iDVD HD. Anything I should know?
Posted by Bullpup on January 25, 2006 at 8:20 pmHowdy,
I’m about (or attempt) to burn a two hour Quicktime DVCPro HD file onto a DVD disc via iDVD HD. Are there any issues I should expect to encounter? Is this even possible?
Also I read on another post that when exporting from FCP for iDVD, it is not necessary to check the “make file self contained” – why is this?

January 25, 2006 at 8:24 pmI may be mistaken but iDVD will not support anything longer than 90 minutes. Need to do this in DVDSP or another DVD authoring program. At least that’s what I’m doing now since I only have version 4 of iDVD.

January 25, 2006 at 8:48 pmHave the standards changed with iDVD HD? What’s up with DVDSP, how much and can I purchase at a local computer store that sells FCP?

January 25, 2006 at 9:28 pmIt MIGHT work now…I’m not sure. It didn’t used to go up to 2 hours but if you have version 5 or 6 I think it’s possible it will work.
You’ll have to go into the prefrencs before you start working and set the encoding to “Best Quality.”
I’m afraid you may just have to use a disc to test it. That might be the only way to really know for sure. I’d suggest not spending a lot of time on the menus for the test. Just add the video, burn a disc, and see if it works. If it does, go back and make it look the way you want it too.
I’m also not positve it will take DVCPROHD files. It might, but if it doesn’t you’ll want to export from Final Cut as an anamorphic DV file and then take that into iDVD.

January 25, 2006 at 9:42 pmI’m wondering if I should just break the project down to two discs and just the audience deal.
The issues I’m wondering about are things like ‘constant crashing during the burn session if the project is longer than 60 min’. I just made that up but there has to be quirks and issues.

January 25, 2006 at 9:51 pmThat might not be a bad idea. Even if it DOES fit on a disc, you’re certainly pushing it in terms of what iDVD can do. With DVD Studio Pro you can do more but there’s a bit of a learning curve.
You sound like you have Final Cut Pro but not DVD Studio Pro. Is that right?
You should know that becaause Apple is making the Studio Package the only way to buy Final Cut from now on they’re offering GREAT upgrade prices.
If you own one of the 4 programs in the studio package now is the cheapest time to upgrade to the whole studio suite, which will include DVD Studio Pro. You have to wait for February, but you can read about it now here:

January 25, 2006 at 10:00 pmI have had perfectly respectable results with a 1 hour 40 minute feature film burn. I understand that the quality remains the same up to 2 hours.
Best
Harry.

January 25, 2006 at 11:57 pmThanks for all the feedback, guys. Yes, I do have FPC but it is the Academic version so I am not able to upgrade for a good discount.
