About installing Tiger, Carbon Copy and necessity of partitioning an external hard drive

I would like to upgrade to Tiger- and will be using carbon copy to do a back up-
I have an external hard drive- lacie 500Gb- but it is already being used to store video material.

Is it possible to partition a disk which is already being used or do I have to start from scratch?

Do I really need to partition the external hard drive in the eventuallity of having to boot from it? or will rebooting work without partitioning?

Thank you very much- I am being ultra cautious before upgrading as I am in the middle of a project.

Hi Nick,

You can’t partition a disk without losing the info already on it. However, you don’t need to. In Carbon Copy Cloner’s preferences there is a couple of options under the “Synchronize Source” section that will help. Check the box for “Sync source to target” and uncheck the box for “Delete items not on source.” Also, check the box for “Make bootable.”

It’s a good idea to attempt to startup off of the cloned drive before upgrading the main – just incase there is some problem. Be sure to repair your startup drive and permissions before cloning as well.

I think I will be patient and wait until I have another external drive to do this- I dont want things to happen to my media data.

However for repairing your drive- is Disk utility enough or do I need something like Disk Warrior?

I recommend DiskWarrior for repairing your drives. Just make sure you use the latest version 3.0.3 when using Tiger. Its inexpensive and does a better job of repairing them than Disk Utility.
